Who gets in ...

The description of a journalist used in this work consists of anyone who was employed on the staff of a newspaper in a journalistic capacity. This includes:

  • sub-editors; leader writers; reviewers.
  • art critics; drama critics; music critics.
  • managing editors; special correspondents; war correspondents.

It also includes artists who worked as cartoonists, illustrators or cartographers as well as photographers. Freelance journalists and contributors who or were members of a recognised professional organisation of journalists are also included.

In terms of types of publication the dictionary includes journalists working on newspapers, magazines, the trade and professional press, the religious press, comic and satirical journals, and specialist publications which cover such things as sport, music or art news.
